Speedball Acquires Akua Water-Based Inks
November 2nd, 2012 – Statesville, North Carolina – Speedball Art Products Co., LLC has acquired the Akua line of professional printmaking inks and accessories.
New York-based master printer Susan Rostow and William Jung first identified a need for the creation of non-toxic printmaking inks prior to the birth of their son in 1996. They created Akua water-based inks, which enabled them to continue to create their art in their home studio without the worry of toxic elements. Akua inks can be used in a variety of printmaking techniques, including monotype, intaglio, relief, and collagraph. They are uniquely formulated to always stay wet on the printing plate, allowing for maximum flexibility in working time.
“Akua monotype and intaglio inks offer important performance advantages over existing products and will complement Speedball’s leading position in the relief and screen printing categories,” noted Walt Glazer, CEO of Speedball Art Products. “The combination of Speedball and Akua is a great fit to best meet the needs of artists and service our retail partners.”
Susan Rostow, co-founder of Akua identified Speedball as the ideal partner because, “I know they share the same passion for providing artists and students with a wide range of high quality products for safer traditional and contemporary printmaking.” Susan will join Speedball as a consultant focused on product development, artist relations, development of instructional videos and guides, and demonstrations representing the Akua and Speedball brands.
Customer service will be a top priority during transition, and Speedball anticipates uninterrupted customer service and support. In Q1 of 2013, product and shipments of Akua inks will transfer to Speedball’s 220,000 square foot facility in Statesville, NC.
